Bill Ruru
as Tangata Kaitiaki to assist
with the management of Customary Fishing.

appear in the Gisborne Herald:
Notification of Tangata Kaitiaki—Te Aitanga a Mahaki Trust
The following notice is
given pursuant to regulation 6 of the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing)
Regulations 1998.
Under regulation 5 of the
above Regulations, Te Aitanga a Mahaki Trust,
being representative
of tāngata whenua who claim management rights over an area off Gisborne, has
notified the Minister of Fisheries of its Tangata Kaitiaki/Tiaki (Tangata
Kaitiaki).
Phillip Lewis
Gully, Ian Hector Ruru and Potatutatu Bill Ruru
have been nominated as
Tangata Kaitiaki to assist with the management of customary food-gathering
from Tatapouri Point around
to Ohikarongo. The
area extends seaward to the EEZ.

Te
Aitanga a Mahaki Trust represents Te Aitanga a Mahaki as an iwi authority
for the purposes of the Resource Management Act 1991 and as the mandated iwi
organisation under the Maori Fisheries Act 2004. The boundaries of Te
Aitanga a Mahaki are defined by Schedule 4 of its Trust Deed.
Te
Aitanga a Mahaki Trust has made it known that it claims non-exclusive
customary interest of the area and promotes shared and sustainable
management of the proposed area/rohe moana. Under the customary fishing
regulations this would mean sharing the management with Tangata Whenua.
Submissions in response to
this notification are invited from authorised representatives of:

Te Aitanga a Mahaki Trust
Ø
any iwi,
rūnanga, tribal trust board or other organisation representing the relevant
iwi interest
Ø
any other
whänau, hapü or iwi claiming manawhenua manamoana in respect of customary
food-gathering in any part of the above area.

Regulation 27A
For Te Aitanga a Mahaki, Regulation 27A of the Fisheries (Amateur Fishing)
Regulations 1986 applies to all marine and freshwater customary fishing for
hui or tangi.
Te Aitanga a Mahaki has appointed fisheries Kaitiaki who sustainably
manage customary fishing for the iwi.
